Fox 25/48 is putting the spotlight on Trempealeau County as part of our ongoing series of “County by County” community special reports. Starting nightly during the Fox 25/48 First News at Nine on May 15, we’ll be talking about the people, places, history and future of Trempealeau County. Our five days of coverage culminates on May 20 with a 30-minute special. Our series will be sponsored by some of the very businesses that make the community thrive.
About Trempealeau County
Trempealeau County is named after the Trempealeau River and the 425-foot conical rock mound located inside of Perrot State Park just north of the village of Trempealeau. Native Americans in the region referred to the mound as “the mountain in the water.” French fur traders followed suit, naming the mound la montagne qui trempe à l’eau, which means “mountain steeped in water” or “the mountain whose foot is bathed in water.” Today, that conical rock mound—one of only three rock mounds to be fully surrounded by the Mississippi River—is known as Trempealeau Mountain.
The Special on May 20
“The goal of ‘County by County’ is to inform and inspire,” said Judson Beck, vice president and general manager of Fox 25/48. “Over the course of a week of dedicated coverage on-air and online, we will find stories about the special people and places throughout our area. Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota all come together here as part of the Driftless Region. It’s an incredible place to call home. If we can share a story you haven’t heard or highlight hometown heroes that were unknown to you, we all benefit. Maybe we can even motivate viewers to visit and explore these incredible places.”
This year, we’ll be featuring sponsor Ashley Furniture. The Ashley Furniture corporate headquarters has called Arcadia, Wisconsin, home since 1982, although the company’s history in the heart of Trempealeau County goes back much further. We’ll also be taking an in-depth look at the region’s premier arts festival, Ashley for the Arts, which takes places Aug. 10-12 at Memorial Park in Arcadia.
Want more? We’ll also be spending time at Perrot State Park (a 1,270-acre park adjacent to the Mississippi River), Trempealeau Mountain Golf Club, Krazy K’s in Ettrick, and Stockman’s Farm Supply in Osseo, in addition to several other communities, historical sites and natural areas throughout the county.
