The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks—TV-MA
Based on real-life events (and a novel by the same name), this HBO drama tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman who, when diagnosed with cancer, had cells removed without her permission in 1951. Since then, her cells went on to pioneer medical treatment and advancements. This film chronicles Henrietta’s story and how her death affected her family, the medical community and the world. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” was produced by and stars Oprah Winfrey. The film will be released on DVD Sept. 5.
Lee Hayden (Sam Elliot) is an aging Western actor and an icon with a golden voice. Desperate to work, Hayden resorts to voiceovers when he learns he has pancreatic cancer. In this character-driven story, Hayden works to reunite with his daughter and examine his priorities. “The Hero” also stars Nick Offerman, Krysten Ritter and Laura Prepon. The film is scheduled for release Sept. 19.8.
The Good Place: Season 1
When Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) dies, she awakens to find she’s in a suburb called The Good Place. Knowing she was a horrible person in life, Eleanor realizes she’s there by mistake and works to make amends for her past indiscretions to try to keep her position in The Good Place. Also starring Ted Danson, this show is a hilarious and unpredictable way to depict the afterlife. “The Good Place: Season 1” will be available Oct. 17.
