March is Women’s History Month, a time to highlight and celebrate the contributions women have made to our local communities and our nation.
At Fox 25/48, Women’s History Month gives us a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the women who changed the way we live today. Throughout the month of March, Fox 25/48 will bring you stories of the influence women have on public policy, social issues and the quality of life.
In the late 1970s, women’s history was still a remarkably unknown topic, both in schools and among the general public. In fact, only three percent of textbooks in K-12 curriculum mentioned women and the significant impact they’ve had on history. In March 1980, 60 years after women won the right to vote, President Jimmy Carter declared the first week of March as Women’s History Week. By the end of the decade, the month of March would be declared Women’s History Month by Congress.
Now in 2019, more women have been elected to this Congress than any other in history. Ignited by a new wave of activism, today’s women are increasingly breaking down barriers and forging new paths. March is a time to reflect and honor women of the past and inspire future generations to continue pushing boundaries.
Starting March 1, in honor of Women’s History Month, our website www.WIProud.com will feature stories of local women and their achievements. Plus, we’ll have exclusive web extras highlighting women’s history that you won’t get anywhere else.
Then, beginning Monday, March 18, First News on Fox will bring you a story each night of the week that showcases the impact women have had on local communities here and around the country.
On Sunday, March 31, at 9:35 p.m. we’ll conclude the Fox 25/48 Women’s History Month celebration with our locally produced 30-minute special: “Celebrating Women.” This program will take a deeper dive into the stories we’ve been celebrating all month and will feature local women in our community.
Judson Beck, vice president and general manager, is excited to launch Women’s History, which joins Hidden History, Hispanic Heritage and Veteran’s Voices as our new premier franchise in 2019. “This is an important chapter on which our station and community should focus and celebrate. We will broadcast and stream news stories, educational vignettes and a 30-minute special recognizing those who lead the charge in our local community and across the country. We are very proud to bring this important content to our viewers on Fox 25/48 and WIProud.com.”
Please join Fox 25/48 and www.WIProud.com in the month of March as we bring you inspiring and eye-opening stories celebrating Women’s History Month. This special is also brought to viewers in part by the Tomah Chamber and Visitors Center and Furnish 123.
